National Volunteering supports the promotion, development and strengthening of local and national volunteering by promoting active citizenship, enabling people to contribute to the development of their own communities.

We believe that active citizenship and increased community participation can lead to more transparent and participatory forms of governance, increasing involvement and ownership of local people in public decision-making processes.

Our approach is to provide assistance to local and national organisations to develop and manage volunteer programmes that respond to locally-identified priorities.

VSO will not run these volunteering programmes but will support local agencies in doing so, where they provide an effective way of addressing shared development aims.

We are currently recruiting volunteers from Canada and our five other recruitment bases to support our National Volunteering partners overseas

VSO is looking for international volunteers with significant experience in volunteer program development, implementation and management in support of our National Volunteering program. This may involve working with government on developing national volunteering policy, supporting civil society to develop and strengthen local volunteer programs, or working with the corporate sector to develop Employer-supported volunteering initiatives.

VSO currently has placements available in Cameroon, China, Ghana, Mongolia, Namibia and Sierra Leone. For more information on these placements or on National Volunteering in general, click here or email us at .

What kind of National Volunteering activities does VSO support?
VSO values both formal and informal volunteering, and is open to supporting the development of volunteering in the government, non-government and corporate sector.

We aim to support and promote a wide range of volunteering initiatives through organizations that depend on volunteers to implement programmes. This includes full-time and part-time volunteering, volunteering in one’s own community as well as volunteering away from home.

Our support for National Volunteering includes:

  • Partnerships to facilitate the creation and development of local volunteering programmes, including programmes that link national and international volunteers in complementary roles.
  • Facilitating sharing and learning between volunteering organizations through training, study tours, workshops and mentoring.
  • Providing resources and expertise on programme research, development, management and evaluation.
  • Supporting initiatives that enable people from a range of backgrounds and ages to contribute to achieving shared development goals.
