Volunteer Stories Shelina A. Gwaduri, with National Volunteering in Mongolia
It is said that one of the keys for a successful country includes a robust and participatory civil society in which the real resource of a nations is its people; one of the vital components in achieving these goals has been through the use of volunteers.
The Mongolian National Volunteering Network consists of 24 local and national NGOs and was founded on the basis of promoting volunteering throughout the country. My experiences working with the Network has enabled me to assist its members by developing management skills, increasing public awareness through advocacy and campaigning, resource mobilization as well as developing multi- sector cooperations to support volunteering throughout the country.
For example, currently, I am assisting the Mongolian Red Cross Society develop policy manuals for their organizations while concurrently developing a Volunteer Management Training Seminar for the Network; the skills and knowledge our Network members receive allows them to transfer it to their volunteers across the country; these volunteers are then able to successfully deliver social care and educational services that many Mongolians, especially those living in remote areas, desperately need.
The National Volunteering Network, while integrating various parts of the society, is effectively building a self- sustainable system while simultaneously exemplifying the strong commitment to steer volunteerism for development across the country.
