Finances
Will I be out of pocket as a result of going overseas with VSO Canada?
No. As a VSO volunteer, you can expect a comprehensive financial package of practical assistance from VSO Canada. This will prepare you for your placement, support you while you are overseas, and help you to ease back into life upon your return home.
Specifically:
- All travel arrangements related to your placement (to assessment, training, and overseas/return) will be paid for by VSO Canada. This does not include personal travel. If an emergency occurs at home, a return flight will be paid by VSO Canada for compassionate leave in specific circumstances.
- Expenses related to the training programs will be covered by VSO, except for expenses of a personal nature.
- Before you leave, you will be eligible for an equipment grant of up to $1000 to equip yourself with any necessary items to help you carry out your job overseas, or for items of a personal nature that will be unavailable in your country of placement. An additional grant will be made mid-way through your placement for further unanticipated requirements.
- Your visa/permit will be arranged and paid in full by VSO Canada.
- Assistance with student loan interest payments will be available to cover the interest portion of officially registered Canadian and provincial student loans.
- You will be covered for required vaccinations.
- Quarterly payments of $300 will be deposited into your Canadian bank account to assist with any ongoing commitments at home while you are overseas.
- You will receive a living allowance while overseas. Most volunteers find that this is adequate for a comfortable quality of life.
- You will be provided with accommodation - this will be either shared, or a house/apartment of your own.
- Upon your return home, an end-of-service grant will be available to assist you with resettling in Canada and finding employment.
